Getting started

This guide takes you from applying for an account to a connected XProtect system.

Before you start

You’ll need:

  • XProtect 2022 R3 or newer is recommended. On older versions, some tools may not be available.
  • Administrator access to the Windows machine running your Management Server, or to another machine that can reach it
  • Windows PowerShell 5.1, standard on supported versions of Windows
  • The free MilestonePSTools PowerShell module. If it isn’t installed, the installer downloads it from the PowerShell Gallery.
  • Outbound HTTPS to connect.vmstools.pro on port 443, with no inbound ports
  • Optional: outbound HTTPS to api.ipify.org, which the agent uses to look up your network’s public IP address. If it’s blocked, everything else still works.
  • An XProtect account for the agent to use. It’s stored only on the agent’s machine.

1. Apply for access

Apply for early access. It takes about two minutes. Applying doesn’t create an account. We review every application personally.

2. Set your password

If you’re approved, you’ll get an email with a link to set your password. The link is valid for 7 days. Your first step is to accept the Terms of Service and choose a password. Your organization is then ready.

3. Install the agent

In the dashboard, add a Management Server and open the install link on the machine where the agent will run. The installer walks you through each step, including how the agent signs in to XProtect, with either a Windows account or a basic user.

4. Check the dashboard

Your system appears within about a minute of the agent connecting. Health data starts flowing right away, and camera and configuration data fills in as the agent discovers your system.

5. Optional: add Recording Servers

For per-machine health on each Recording Server (CPU, memory, disk and network), install a secondary agent on those machines too. The main agent on the Management Server handles everything else.
