The operations platform for Milestone XProtect
Run XProtect, not just configure it
XProtect gives you the tools to set it up. VMSTools Pro adds the tools to run it: monitoring, audit trails, reports and remote tools for every system you look after. No VPN, no open firewall ports, and your XProtect passwords never leave your network.
XProtect records the video. Running it is left to you.
- Dozens of servers across sites, and no single place that shows how they’re all doing.
- A camera drops off, and nobody notices until someone needs the recording.
- A Care Plus date or a license limit slips past because nobody was watching it.
- Renaming hundreds of cameras, or exporting a week of video, means hours in a remote desktop session.
- An auditor asks who exported what last spring, and the log has already aged out.
VMSTools Pro adds the operations layer XProtect doesn’t include. It watches every server, keeps the records, measures each system against best practice and turns the big jobs into a few clicks.
What VMSTools Pro adds to XProtect
-
Every server, watched
Recording health for every Recording Server, access and management health for the Management Server, nearly 30 built-in conditions that flag problems early, and uptime history for each system.
-
Licenses and Care Plus
Device licenses used against your total, a full history of every SLC change, and a dashboard alert as Care Plus expiry approaches.
-
An audit trail you keep
Keep XProtect's audit logs long after XProtect would have purged them, search by user, camera and event, and export to CSV.
-
Health checks and reports
A guided health check that produces a complete report you can save as PDF, plus camera reports, storage audits and best-practice checks.
-
Big jobs, done remotely
Export long stretches of video, rename cameras in bulk, back up configuration and databases, and design custom Smart Client layouts, all from the browser.
-
For people who script
Keep and run your own MilestonePSTools scripts, each one checked before it runs. Nobody else on the team has to touch PowerShell.

Built for the people who keep XProtect running
-
Integrators and MSPs
Switch between customer systems from one login. Each customer keeps ownership of their account and can revoke your access at any time.
-
Enterprise and multi-site teams
Dozens of Recording Servers across sites, one view of how they're all doing, and an early warning when one starts to struggle.
-
Teams with audit obligations
HIPAA, CJIS, FERPA, SOX. Keep XProtect's audit trail long after XProtect would have purged it, and find what an auditor asks for in minutes.
-
Solution engineers
Produce a full health check report built on weeks of continuous data, not a 24-hour snapshot.
Built for networks that stay closed
-
No VPN, no open ports
The agent only makes outbound connections. Nothing connects in, except during a port test you start yourself, and your firewall stays as it is.
-
Your XProtect passwords stay local
They're stored on the agent's machine and never sent to us. See Security.
-
No video in our cloud
Video stays on your Recording Servers. Exports are written to storage you choose.
-
Nothing to host
Just a lightweight agent. There's no database, web server or portal to install and maintain on your network.
-
MFA and step-up checks
Authenticator-app MFA, plus a recent MFA or password check before custom scripts run.
Up and running in three steps
No firewall changes, no VPN, no remote desktop.
-
Step 1: Apply
Tell us about your XProtect environment. We review every application personally and approve about a dozen organizations a week.
-
Step 2: Install the agent
A lightweight Windows service on your Management Server, or on any machine that can reach it. The installer walks you through it.
-
Step 3: Open the dashboard
Your system appears within about a minute of the agent connecting. How it works
Early access is open, by application
We're bringing organizations on a few at a time so each gets real attention. Early adopters work directly with the founder and help decide what gets built next. In return, we ask for occasional, candid feedback.
Common questions
- Do I need to know PowerShell?
No. Everything works from the dashboard, and nobody on your team has to read or write a script. If you do script, there's a library where you can keep and run your own, each one checked before it runs.
- Does it replace the Management Client?
No. You'll still configure XProtect in the Management Client. VMSTools Pro works alongside it and adds what it doesn't cover: monitoring over time, audit trails, reports and remote tools.
- Do I need a VPN or firewall changes?
No. The agent only makes outbound, encrypted connections, the same direction a web browser uses. Nothing on your network has to accept inbound connections.
- Is there anything to host on my network?
Only the agent, a lightweight Windows service. There's no database, web server or portal to install or maintain. The dashboard runs in our cloud.
- Where is my XProtect password stored?
Only on the machine running the agent. It's used to sign in to your Management Server locally, and it's never sent to or stored in the VMSTools Pro cloud.
- Which XProtect versions are supported?
We recommend XProtect 2022 R3 or newer. On older versions, some tools may not be available. Live audit log streaming needs 2025 R3 or newer. On earlier versions the agent collects the audit log by polling it every minute while it runs.
- What does it cost?
There's nothing to pay for during early access. Paid capabilities will come later, with prices shown before anything is charged. See pricing
- I'm an integrator. How do I manage several customers?
Each customer has their own account and grants you access. You switch between customer organizations from one login, and the customer can revoke access at any time. If you host everything yourself, one account can also hold all of your Management Servers.
- Is VMSTools Pro made by Milestone?
No. VMSTools Pro is an independent product built by OpenWare Pro LLC. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Milestone Systems.
