About

Built by someone who's spent a decade around XProtect

VMSTools Pro is made by OpenWare Pro LLC in Longmont, Colorado.

Why it exists

VMSTools Pro was founded by Dave Nieweg, who spent more than ten years at Milestone Systems working with the integrators and end users who run XProtect every day.

XProtect is very good at what it was built to do: connect cameras, record video and play it back. The same problems kept coming up around it. A camera goes down and nobody notices until the footage is needed. A system grows to dozens of servers across sites, and nobody can say how they’re all doing. Checking a remote site means a VPN, a remote desktop session or a drive. A Care Plus renewal slips past. An auditor asks who exported what, and someone loses an afternoon finding out.

Some of that work can be scripted, if you have someone who knows XProtect’s internals well. Most teams don’t, and they shouldn’t need one. VMSTools Pro turns that work into tools anyone can use from a browser, ones that work from anywhere without weakening the network that protects the cameras.

What we believe

  • Credentials belong on the customer’s network. The agent connects out, and your XProtect passwords never leave.
  • Simple on the surface, open underneath. You shouldn’t need to write scripts to run XProtect well. If you do write them, you get a safe place to keep and run your own.
  • Customers own their data. Integrators work in customer accounts by invitation, and access can be revoked at any time.
  • Early users shape the product. What gets built next comes from the people using it.

Built on open source

VMSTools Pro works through XProtect’s own interfaces and MilestonePSTools, the open-source PowerShell module created by Josh Hendricks and now published by Milestone Systems.

Independent

VMSTools Pro is independent and not affiliated with Milestone Systems. Milestone and XProtect are trademarks of Milestone Systems A/S.
